Fairhaven's Exterior Challenge: Marine Air Meets Constant Moisture

Fairhaven sits close enough to the water that salt air is a real factor in how exterior materials age, and it shares the broader Whatcom County pattern of long, wet winters and a moss season that can stretch for months. Homes here take on a specific combination of stresses: airborne salt that accelerates corrosion and finish breakdown, driving rain that gets pushed sideways into siding laps and trim during winter storms, and shaded, damp conditions that let moss and algae take hold on north-facing walls and anything close to tree cover. Any siding material that's marginal on moisture resistance or coating durability tends to show it faster in a neighborhood like this than it would further inland.

We work throughout Sudden Valley and the surrounding Whatcom County area, and Fairhaven is a community we know well. That matters because exterior work here isn't generic — a crew that understands the local exposure, the way wind-driven rain behaves against different elevations of a house, and how moss actually establishes itself is going to make better calls on flashing, ventilation, and product selection than a crew that's just following a standard spec sheet.

Why We Install Only James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding

We made the decision to install exclusively James Hardie fiber cement siding, and we don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, Cemplank, Allura, primed spruce, or cedar. That's not a marketing position — it's a standard we hold because of what we see on homes in exactly this kind of climate.

  • Non-combustible material. Fiber cement doesn't burn, which matters for long-term peace of mind regardless of the specific fire risk in any given neighborhood.
  • Built for moisture, not just tolerant of it. Hardie's HZ5 product line is engineered for wetter, harsher climates like the Pacific Northwest, with a formulation designed to resist moisture-related damage better than wood-based or vinyl alternatives.
  • Factory-applied ColorPlus finish. Instead of field-applied paint, the color is baked on in a controlled factory process. That finish holds up better against UV, salt exposure, and the repeated wet-dry cycling that's normal here, and it resists fading and chipping longer than most site-applied coatings.
  • A warranty that's actually structured to back the product. Hardie's transferable warranty reflects confidence in long-term performance, which is part of why we're comfortable standing behind it on every install.

Vinyl siding is inexpensive and easy to install, but it can warp or become brittle with temperature swings and doesn't offer the same fire resistance. Wood products like cedar or primed spruce look great initially but demand ongoing maintenance — repainting, caulking, and moisture monitoring — that's a bigger commitment in a climate with this much sustained dampness. LP SmartSide and other engineered wood products have improved over the years, but they're still wood-based composites that rely heavily on correct installation and sealed edges to keep moisture out over the long run. We'd rather put one product on every home, know it inside and out, and install it correctly every time than juggle multiple systems with different failure points.

What Correct Installation Looks Like in a Marine-Influenced Climate

Fiber cement siding performs the way it's rated to perform only when it's installed to spec. In an area with Fairhaven's exposure, that means:

  • Proper clearances and flashing at every window, door, and roofline intersection, so wind-driven rain has nowhere to collect against the wall assembly.
  • A correctly detailed water-resistive barrier behind the siding, giving the wall a drainage plane if any moisture does get past the exterior cladding.
  • Factory-cut, factory-primed edges wherever possible, since cut edges are the most vulnerable point on any fiber cement installation and need to be sealed correctly.
  • Attention to ventilation around shaded and tree-covered elevations, where reduced airflow and sun exposure are exactly the conditions that let moss and algae get a foothold.

These aren't optional refinements — they're the difference between a fiber cement installation that lives up to its warranty and one that develops problems at the seams within a few years.

More Than Siding: A Full Exterior Approach

Siding doesn't work in isolation. Roofing, windows, and decks all interact with how water moves around and off a house, which is why we handle all four. A roof with poor drainage detail can dump water directly onto a siding wall below it. Windows with failed flashing can push moisture behind the cladding regardless of how well the siding itself was installed. Decks attached to the house need ledger flashing that protects the wall assembly, not just the deck structure. Looking at the whole exterior as one connected system, rather than treating each component separately, is how you actually solve moisture problems instead of just moving them around.

A Local Crew That Knows This Ground

Working regularly in Whatcom County and around communities like Fairhaven means we've seen how different products and installation details hold up over years, not just at the walkthrough. That local track record is part of why we've standardized on one siding system instead of offering a menu of options — we'd rather be genuinely expert in the product that performs best here than moderately familiar with several.
